Learning English opens doors to new opportunities, whether for career growth, travel, or personal enrichment. The internet offers countless resources, but finding the right platform can be overwhelming. This post highlights ten of the best websites and platforms that help learners improve their English skills effectively. Each option caters to different learning styles and goals, making it easier to find the perfect fit.

My Top 10 Recommendations for learning English online;
1. Duolingo
Duolingo is one of the most popular language learning apps worldwide. It uses gamification to make learning English online fun and engaging. The platform offers bite-sized lessons that cover vocabulary, grammar, reading, and listening skills. Its interactive exercises adapt to your level, helping you build confidence step by step.
Key features:
Short daily lessons ideal for busy schedules
Immediate feedback on exercises
Progress tracking and streaks to motivate learners
Free access with optional premium subscription for ad-free experience
Duolingo works well for beginners who want to practice regularly without feeling overwhelmed.
My Personal Opinion as an Experienced English Teacher;
Duolingo is great for starting out, but once you get past the beginner stage it is not very helpful. You need feedback and interactive practice, not just say and repeat style exercises.
I also don't like that it is 75% AI driven - real people speak real English, AI speaks AI English.
2. BBC Learning English
BBC Learning English provides high-quality content created by professional educators and journalists. It focuses on real-life English used in everyday situations, news, and culture. The site offers videos, audio programs, quizzes, and downloadable materials.
Highlights:
Clear explanations of grammar and vocabulary
Series like "English at Work" and "The English We Speak"
News stories simplified for English learners
Free access with no registration required
This platform suits learners who want to improve listening and comprehension skills while staying informed about current events.
My Personal Opinion;
Great for learning new vocabulary and diving into a range of different topics. It does take a lot of self motivation though, as you need to look up the words and practice them. 15 minutes a day reading an article on the tube or listening to a topic on the train would be helpful though!
